"Love On Your Knees" is embarrassingly bad.

It's hard to rank "I Ran," "Wishing," "The More You Live, The More You Love," "Nightmares" or "Modern Love Is Automatic" - they're all equally wonderful! I also share love for "Never Again (The Dancer)." Album #4 is a piece of crap for the most part, but "Who's That Girl (She's Got It)" and "Heartbeat Like A Drum" are goofy, silly and fun synthy singles. "Space Age Love Song" is probably my favorite (that guitar!!!), and all the other big singles are tied for second place. First 2 albums are both solid and the third is quite lovable. The songs themselves are great, but it's his guitar that really seals the deal - I love synths, but I tend to love groups classified as new wave that put guitars prominently in the mix. As others have said, Paul Reynolds really was the magic in the band. To me, AFOS epitomize the "new wave" sound that I loved so much in the early '80s, and they were a very important piece of the MTV puzzle at the time. I personally love the hair and the look, but unfortunately it has caused many, many people to judge them before listening to the music. I think it may have been because the synth was not in the forefront of most songs, but at least their fan base lives on. 'Wishing' was their biggest UK hit, and I think 'I Ran' charted only in the mid 40's.

But then it would just be a shell of their former glory, unless it was a full scale reunion.ĪFOS didn't seem to have much chart success at all in the UK. OMD singing about a phone booth is my type of subject matter, so AFOS should get back to the sci-fi themes, or at least something a little less yawn-inducing. I've never cared for romance lyrics, they're so banal, and always preferred lyrics about anything else. Mike Score writes about little else than being hot for one girl or another. Last night, I sampled some of the 1995 album, some of which I was familiar with from years ago, and really hated it. If Mike Score would have learned even a little humility, they could have carried on. Frank stated he would do it in an instant, Mom Score said she knows her sons wish they never broke up, and Paul Reynolds started getting emotional when he said it felt like coming back home. The reunion was eye-opening because you could see how the other 3 would have really liked to get together and stay together. I suspect he broke the tension a lot when the brothers would go at it. They were such fun! Frank from AFOS surprised me by being a total lunatic in the best possible way. That was sad because no one in that band should have to struggle. I once read years ago about a member of another New Wave favorite, Altered Images, being a cab driver. He was a manager and had been there for years, so hopefully he's making a decent living.

I don't feel too bad about Ali working in a factory. Exceptions seem to be 'Wishing' and 'Nightmares', but then comes the unrecognizable 12" mix of 'The More You Live.' It seems a lot of their 7" versions were either edits or remixes, where as the 12" was usually just the LP version.
